As a player, Shammgod was known for his exceptional ball-handling skills and his ability to create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. He was a key member of the Philadelphia 76ers team that reached the NBA Finals in 2001.

After retiring from playing, Shammgod began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers. He then spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors, helping the team win the NBA championship in 2015.
