How to Register Your Vehicle in Texas

Moving to Texas

If you've recently moved to Texas, you have 30 days to register your vehicle and get Texas plates. You can do this at any county tax assessor-collector's office. You will need to provide the following documents:

  • Proof of ownership (title or registration card)
  • Proof of insurance
  • A valid driver's license
  • Payment for the registration fee

Renewing Your Vehicle Registration

You can renew your vehicle registration online, by mail, or in person at your local county tax assessor-collector's office. You will need to provide your vehicle's registration number and the last four digits of your Social Security number or Tax ID number. You will also need to pay the registration fee.

Transferring Your Vehicle Registration

If you have moved to a new county in Texas, you will need to transfer your vehicle registration. You can do this at your new county's tax assessor-collector's office. You will need to provide the following documents:
