Decisive Naval Battle

Eliminated Japan's Carrier Force and Air Power

In a decisive carrier battle during the invasion of the Mariana Islands in June 1944, the U.S. Navy and Air Force dealt a crushing blow to the Japanese Navy, eliminating its carrier force and air power.

American carrier air power, led by experienced pilots, decimated the inexperienced Japanese Navy pilots in the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. The U.S. Navy's Task Force 58 Fast Carrier Task Force clashed with the Japanese Navy's Mobile Fleet, resulting in a massive air battle.

This battle was a turning point in the Pacific War, as it gave the U.S. Navy control of the air and sea in the Pacific. The Japanese Navy never recovered from this defeat, and the U.S. went on to victory in the war.
