Mike Tomlin shares concerning update on injured Steelers punter Cam Johnston
Steelers punter Cam Johnston suffered a likely season-ending quad injury in Sunday's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Johnston was injured while attempting to make a tackle on a punt return in the second quarter. He was carted off the field and did not return.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin gave an update on Johnston's injury after the game, saying that it is likely a season-ending quad injury.
"It's a tough one," Tomlin said. "He's a great player and a great person. We're going to miss him.
Johnston was one of the Steelers' most consistent players in 2021. He averaged 45.4 yards per punt, which was eighth in the NFL.
The Steelers will now have to find a replacement for Johnston. They have two other punters on their roster, Pressley Harvin III and Chris Boswell.
Harvin III is a rookie who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech. Boswell is the Steelers' kicker, but he has also punted in the past.
The Steelers will have to make a decision on who will replace Johnston before their regular season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 11.
